Taming the Product Liability Beast: Ten Things You Can Do To Protect Yourself

Manufacturers face enormous risks every day of potentially catastrophic product liability lawsuits. In this informative session, we will present manufacturers with the top ten things they can do -- and should do -- to protect themselves. Drawing from real life case studies, product liability defense lawyer Gary Glass will share some entertaining (and sometimes frightening) examples of what works -- and what does not.

Gary Glass, Thompson Hine LLP

Gary Glass is a product liability lawyer and partner at the law firm of Thompson Hine LLP. He chairs the firm's risk management consulting group, which advises manufacturers on prudent strategies for eliminating, reducing or managing their product liability and manufacturing risks. Glass focuses his practice on defending product liability cases for manufacturers of automobile, construction and industrial machinery, and food preparation equipment. He also defends workplace intentional tort and OSHA claims involving product design, machine guarding, and plant safety issues. Glass received his bachelor's from Colgate University and his J.D. from the University of Notre Dame.


Energy and Plant Operations Management at Valero Energy Corporation

Learn how Valero has significantly improved information delivery for plant operations. In its efforts to standardize operations by propagating best practices across a number of disparate plants, Valero is investing in technology and focusing on standardized process automation. Valero has come to appreciate how focusing on increasing team collaboration (through increasing visibility and transparency of business processes) can dramatically improve operations and achieve significant cost savings with respect to energy consumption. Valero will explain its successes and learnings while detailing its future strategy for continued improvement and its partners along the way.

As Vice President of Operations Systems Development at Valero, Nayaki Nayyar is responsible for Refining and Commercial application development at Valero. Prior to taking on this role this year, Nayyar headed the Enterprise Architecture and Technical services at Valero for the last 10 years. She has over 15 years of IT and Oil Industry experience, and has been Valero since 2000. At Valero, she was responsible for driving the eSOA, Portal, BI, and Enterprise 2.0 strategies. Prior to joining Valero, Nayyar worked for Shell, where she gained tremendous business knowledge in Oil & Gas industry and started her SAP journey. She has a bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering and a master's in Computer Science.




Best Practices in Supplier Management

Manufacturing excellence requires strong supplier partnerships. Without such relationships, even the best-run facilities will struggle to meet customers' demands in a productive, efficient manner. In this presentation, 2009 IndustryWeek Best Plants winner General Cable – Altoona Plant will share supplier management practices it has incorporated to help drive operational excellence. General Cable will discuss its use of supplier-managed inventory as well as consignment inventory methods. Additionally, the speakers will address cost-savings initiatives undertaken with suppliers.

Ken Smith, Plant Manager, General Cable

Ken Smith is plant manager with General Cable in Altoona, Pa. General Cable is a leader in the design, development, manufacture and distribution of copper, aluminum and fiber optic wire and cable products for the communications, energy, industrial and specialty markets. The Altoona plant specifically assembles ignition wire sets for the aftermarket and original equipment manufacturers.

Smith has a bachelor's in manufacturing engineering from Bradley University, and a master's in business administration from St. Francis University. He is also a certified LeanSigma Blackbelt.



Learjet's Strategic Transformation -- Impact on the Supply Chain

Learn from the dramatic changes that have taken place at Bombardier Learjet in Wichita, Kan., as it embarked on a journey to a lean operation, with an emphasis on how those changes have both included and benefited the supply chain. The strategic transformation has been Learjet's primary focus for the past three years, and has resulted in tangible and intangible results across the entire business. In the supply function, there has been a significant focus on shortage management, clear and visible performance metrics for the supply professionals and a drive for daily material delivery.

Mike Mitchell, Director of Aerostructures, Bombardier Learjet

Mike Mitchell is Director of Learjet Operations Aerostructures. He joined Bombardier Learjet in October, 1997 as Manager of Material Logistics. He managed within several roles from final assembly management to detail fabrication. He became Manager of Material Control in June, 1998 responsible for inventory, shipping and receiving in two sites, Completions Tucson, Arizona and Production Wichita, Kansas. Prior to Bombardier Learjet Mitchell spent 19 years at AlliedSignal in various roles between Material Management and Manufacturing Operations.

Jacqueline Coleman, Director of Operations, Bombardier Learjet

Jacqueline Coleman is currently Director of Learjet Operations responsible for Final Assembly, Paint, Completions, and Flight. She joined Bombardier Learjet in 1990 as a Material Analyst. Coleman became a buyer in 1991 and spent 13 years in Procurement in the areas of Non-Product, Outside Production, Interiors, Raw Material, Customer Service, and Systems as a buyer and supervisor in Wichita and Tucson. In 2002, she became Manager of Challenger 300 Procurement for new aircraft development through certification, and assisted with program transition to Montreal. Coleman returned to Wichita in 2004 as Material Logistics Manager for Learjet Completions and became Director of Material Logistics from May 2006 until September 2009.

Mike Powell, Sr. Manager, Strategic Planning, Canon Virginia, Inc.


James "Mike" Powell has been a steady force at Canon Virginia, Inc., Canon's only U.S. based manufacturing facility, in Newport News, Va. for the past 23 years. Powell's contributions have been in procurement, logistics, materials planning, business development and strategic planning departments. He was integral in launching lean manufacturing principles into the facility as well as on the project team that successfully classified Canon Virginia as a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ), saving the company millions of dollars annually. His most recent position as senior manager for business development and special assistant to the President allows Powell to play a key role as project manager in business operations.

He has traveled abroad to Canon Inc. headquarters in Tokyo, Japan to study lean manufacturing principles and presented some of Canon Virginia's successes international to executives at the Headquarters. Powell has a bachelor's in commerce from Washington & Lee University.

Canon Virginia, Inc (CVI) is located on 165-acre campus in the heart of the Hampton Roads region of the state. CVI has 5 facilities with over 2 million square feet of manufacturing space. CVI serves as the lead manufacturing support center for Canon U.S.A. CVI uses world-renowned production systems and extensive technical and manufacturing expertise to offer manufacturing solutions, including injection mold tools, metal and plastic parts, product manufacturing and reverse manufacturing.

As director of sustainability for Owens Corning, her role encompasses global accountability for strategy development in greening our products and effectively communicating the Owens Corning's sustainability practices.

With more than 30 years experience with Owens Corning, Tedhams delivered successful results across several of its businesses and functional areas, including manufacturing leadership in both the U.S. and Europe, global diversity leadership and product line leadership in Insulating Systems business.

Tedhams is president of LEWAS (Lake Erie Western Alliance for Sustainability). She is a frequent guest speaker at major energy forums, conferences and a regular media spokesperson on the topics of global sustainability. She has a bachelor's in civil engineering from Michigan State University.

Key successes will be shared that allowed Milliken to remain competitive in a hyper-competitive environment by creating operational excellence. The focus of the presentation will be how to implement the TPM and Lean tools to ultimately culminate in a holistic operating system.

Chris Glover is Director, Milliken Performance Solutions, for Milliken & Company. In his role, he is responsible for the business unit which engages with clients to create a culture of safety and operational excellence. With 25 years of manufacturing experience within Milliken's operations, Glover held assignments from entry levels as a rotating production manager, process engineer, quality assurance manager and ultimately spending his last 8 years in manufacturing as a plant manager of two manufacturing operations. While Plant Manager, he led his two plants to attain 2 Japanese Institute of Planned Maintenance Prizes. Glover was instrumental in the development and installation of the Milliken Performance System in the plant operations within Milliken & Company. In the last 3 years, his plant was the model plant for implementation of the Lean tools for the entire Company.
